Community: 3 things I have learnt about community in 2024

As the year draws to a close, I like to reflect on the lessons I’ve learned or sharpened my wisdom—especially about community. To me, community is about building and strengthening connections with family, friends, acquaintances, and even strangers through acts of kindness. Whether it is smiling, saying thank you, checking in with someone, giving a thoughtful gift, offering advice, or preparing a meal for someone in need, a community thrives when we come together with our heads, hearts, and hands.

Sustaining and growing a sense of community can be challenging, especially for some of us introverts or those who are natural listeners rather than talkers. This year, I’ve learned three key insights about fostering and maintaining community:

  1. Cast the Net Wide Intially.
At the start of the year, make time to connect with friends and family, attend enriching events, or volunteer in spaces that energize you – show authentic kindness. As you build, nurture, or strengthen these connections, you’ll naturally discover which relationships to nurture and which to let go of over time if the other side is not interested or they drain one’s energy, peace, and joy.
  2. Set Healthy Boundaries
Kindness flourishes when balanced with wisdom and self-care. Being kind doesn’t mean overextending yourself or always saying yes. Sometimes, the kindest act is saying no to protect your energy and prioritize your well-being.
  3. Lead with Love
Kindness is most meaningful when it comes from a place of love—both for yourself and others. If you find yourself going through the motions, pause. Ask yourself: Am I feeling genuine loving kindness right now? If not, take time to refuel your heart before reaching out again or not.

Ultimately, building and sustaining a healthy community is vital for our joy, health, and future. We are all interconnected, and by choosing to be kinder, braver, and more intentional, we can cultivate stronger, healthier communities around us.

One life. Let’s live it with kindness, courage, and intentionality.

xx
