Community: Better words

Sometimes, our friends, family, or acquaintances frustrate us, stirring up unpleasant feelings and words. In those moments, we may say things we wouldn’t say if they were present.

But what if, instead, we chose to respond with kinder, more thoughtful words despite our feelings? I’ve been practicing this, and it’s helped me feel better and not follow the negative feelings down a hopeless path. In addition, feeling frustrated about a person could also be down to hormonal imbalances, tiredness, fewer boundaries, or stress. A passage from the Bible has guided me on this journey.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:6-8

Action:
Each day, focus your mind on speaking more kindly. Keep a reminder to do this by your bedside, and reflect as soon as you wake up and go to sleep -remind yourself to speak better, kinder words throughout the day. It may or may not change your words immediately, but it might!

We only have one life—let’s live it with kindness within ourselves and in our relationships.
